VP Osinbajo arrived in Ouagadougou this morning |
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will be representing President Muhammadu Buhari at the inauguration of the newly elected president of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.
Osinbajo arrived in Ouagadougou this morning, December 29, for the inauguration. He was welcomed by H.E Michel Kafando, the transitional president of Burkina Faso as he arrived.
KaborĂ© won the election last month. He was elected Burkina Faso’s new president, according to preliminary results released by the electoral commission, in an election that will replace a transitional government put in place after the West African nation’s longtime leader was toppled in a popular uprising last year.
Kabore, who will replace the transitional government, dedicated his victory to those who died in the popular uprising that overthrew President Blaise Compaore last year and during resistance to a failed military coup in September.
Buhari had in the early hours of Wednesday, December 16, received Michel Kafando, the transitional president of Burkina Faso at the state house.
Earlier in the year, Burkina Faso experienced a coup. The presidential guard led by General Gilbert Diendere, who was the chief of staff to Blaise Compaore, led the coup in which President Michel Kafando was arrested alongside Yacouba Zida, the interim prime minister.
Nigeria played a crucial role in restoring democracy in the embattled nation, following the extraordinary session of ECOWAS’ heads of state and governments in Abuja, headed by President Buhari.
