Hamid Ali, the comptroller general of Nigerian Custom Services, on Tuesday, December 15, has warned men and officers of Adamawa/Taraba Area Command stating that indiscipline, bribery and other vices would be punished. Outlining his plan out during stakeholders meeting in Yola, the Customs chief said that very soon drugs addicts, armed robbers and kidnappers would be weeded out from the system.
Ali said that the failure of the system to conduct background checks before recruitment was responsible for the employment of all shade of criminals in the system with its dire consequences, Leadership reports. He stressed further that unlike before where background checks were conducted to verify the character of those to be employed but corruption and discipline which has led to problem confronting the service.
The Customs boss added that promotion in the service will be based on hard work which must be endorsed by the supervisor of employees. He explained that the NSC is reviewing its laws to meet the dynamics of modern day customs operations and curb leakages and wastages from the system.
Ali promised officers and men of the service of better working environment and should tighten their belts to improve revenue generation saying with the free fall of oil, the service must do more to drive revenue for the government. Ali had given details of how N1.2 billion was generated by the service between October and November 2015.
